Free SHS education: Should the debate only be about feasibility? – (1)
The opposition NPP has signalled its intention to introduce free SHS education in its first term in office. Whilst they have not as yet given details the debate has already begun in earnest. The little bit we know can be found in the NPP’s 2008 manifesto and the speech delivered by Nana Akufo-Addo at the Liberty Lectures in August 2011, where he said:
“I am committed to making post-JSS education...
Diligence is superior to hard work
Many people cling to tradition. The assumption is that if something is tradition, it must be a better way. But that’s not necessarily so – John C. Maxwell.
It is said in many cycles that in the world of dictionaries, hard work always precedes success.
Human traditions also assume that hard work is a condition precedent to a successful living.
Unfortunately, however, the conclusions of both the...
State of the Nation begins screening on Etv Ghana
Started about three weeks ago, State of the Nation, an interactive political talk-show, has been introduced by Etv Ghana.
In the spirit of ensuring a peaceful political atmosphere, ETV Ghana’s addition to its range of programmes, seeks to offer an objective position to issues of national concern.
“We aim to promote effective dialogue between the various political parties in Ghana as well and the...
Registration Shenanigans
The first quarter of the 2012 biometric registration exercise is ending now. Unfortunately, there have been problems—lots of it.
Let me step back a moment. A comprehensive, fairly-compiled register is the pre-requisite to a credible election. To this end, various actors in the political process, beginning from the Chairman of the Electoral Commission and including the President as well as the leading...
Successful and gainful employment in 2012
While governments are responsible for providing the enabling environment which will cause businesses to flourish, be profitable, expand and provide more employment, the ultimate responsibility for gainful employment lies with every individual. ‘The government’ as an entity will not force you into a classroom to study; or push you to acquire the skills needed for employment.
The government...
Privatizing Korle-Bu is not the silver bullet
I read with mixed feelings the March 25th write up on Korle-Bu hospital published on Ghanaweb.
Though without the same keen insights as Prof. Nartey, I dare to question his call for privatizing Korle-Bu. Though passively sympathetic, I don’t think he is advocating for the right solution to this particular challenge. I believe the social and economic cost of privatizing Korle-Bu will be very steep...
Has religion made useful contributions to civilization?
My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race.
I cannot, however, deny that it has made some contributions to civilization. It helped in early days to fix the calendar, and it caused Egyptian priests to chronicle eclipses with such care that in time they became able to predict them. These two services I am prepared...
Poor maintenance culture
The poor maintenance culture of many Ghanaians has over the years been a cause of concern to many patriotic citizens.
Tax payers’ monies are used to undertake laudable projects in this country and after a period of time these projects are either abandoned before completion or poorly maintained after completion.
A typical example is the pedestrian shopping mall at Kwame Nkrumah Circle undertaken to...
How to improve BECE results – district by district
“If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say unto this mountain, Remove from here to yonder; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” [Matthew 17: 20]
Whoever says that our African youth cannot match the world’s best, does not know what they are talking about! It’s all in how the youth are raised. And further, it boils down to how the teachers, administrators...
Demand more of our leaders (End)
One, a national administration must have a holistic economic agenda, so that while it is building infrastructure and chasing slim macro-economic indices it could also keep the micro-economic environment relatively stable so that living conditions do not get too harsh for the people and (indigenous) businesses will continue to thrive; the micro-economic level is where the Mills administration has failed...
