The Ga East Municipal Assembly on Monday held a short ceremony at Abokobi in Accra to reward senior citizens within the municipality with certificates of honour for their meritorious contribution towards the development of their communities and the nation as a whole.
The event was organised as part of activities marking Ghana’s 50th anniversary since it became a republic.
The event was also used to honor and appreciate past heroes and elderly statesmen and women for their services.
In his address, Mr. John Kwao Sackey, the Ga East Municipal Chief Executive, said it was imperative to show gratitude to the elderly in society for their sacrificial humanitarian services.
“We want to appreciate our senior citizens and show our heartfelt gratitude for their achievements in life and for what they continue to do in an effort to develop our community.
…We can best demonstrate our gratitude by ensuring that our communities become good places to live in where the young and upcoming generations would lead fruitful lives instead of anti-social behaviours,” the Ga East MCE stressed.
For his part, Nii Samuel Adjetey Mohenu, the Chief of Abokobi, thanked leadership of the Ga East Assembly for the kind gesture.
He entreated the youth in the community to support the elderly in society, adding that old age is a stage in life which often burdened people with physical deterioration such as hearing impairment, poor eye sight among others.
“Ga East Municipal Assembly led by Mr. Kwao Sackey has demonstrated that indeed the aged are blessing to every community and therefore deserve to be supported and not to be regarded as witches and burdens,” the Abokobi chief pointed out.
