Amenfi West Gets More Money

Mr. Samuel Victor Meisu, DCE Wassa Amenfi West

The Wassa Amenfi West District Assembly (WAWDA) in the Western Region has made gainful strides in the area of revenue collection.

It has collected an amount of GH¢149,101.06 in the first half of 2010 as against GH¢126,078.46 collected in 2009 in the same period under review.

The breakdown is as follows: rate – GH¢70,000, lands – GH¢143,000, fees and fines – GH¢ 31,350, licenses – GH¢48,025, rents – GH¢500, investments – GH¢3,500 and miscellaneous – GH¢13,000.

As a result of this progress, the assembly is to receive an amount of GH¢564,181.16 from the government through the Performance Based Grant System (PBGS) to undertake further development projects.

It is also to receive a tipper truck, grader, roller and bucket roller from the government through the National Security Council.

The district continues to enjoy its fair share of development projects in areas such as education, health, roads and good governance as construction of a 3-unit classroom block at Gonukrom has been executed at the cost of GH¢38,791.80 of which GH¢5,818.77 has been paid to the contractor.

Under the Schools Under Trees and Basic Schools Rehabilitation (SUTBREP), the GETFund secretariat has approved the construction of a number of school blocks, office, store and ancillary facilities in the district.

Some of the projects are a 6-unit classroom block, office, store and ancillary facilities at Wassa Dunkwa; a 6-unit classroom block, office, store and ancillary facilities at Gonukrom; and, a 6-unit classroom block, office, store and ancillary facilities at Nkwanta No.2. The rest are a 6-unit classroom block, office, store and ancillary facilities at Affiena and a 3-unit classroom block, office, store and ancillary facilities at Agona Amenfi.

These and many others were in a speech delivered by Mr. Victor Samuel Meisu, District Chief Executive (DCE) of Wassa Amenfi West District Assembly, at the second ordinary meeting of the fourth session of the assembly.

He attributed the improvement in the revenue performance to some strategies the assembly employed that included the formation of a revenue task force, engagement of more temporary revenue collectors and training of revenue staff.

He indicated that as part of measures to improve the road network in the district, it has intensified the reshaping of unmotorable roads and the construction of 20 meters span still bridges on two rivers in the district. To improve on sanitation, a number of 120 household latrines have been completed out of 123 latrines to be constructed whilst work on the remaining three are yet to begin.

Mr. Meisu pointed out that to ensure effective and efficient health delivery, the government has supplied the District Health Directorate with 20 motorbikes; the directorate has acquired two Pick-up vehicles from its Internally Generated Fund (IGF) at the cost of GH¢75,000 to facilitate service delivery.

He noted that peace and security is the bedrock for any meaningful development in any part of the world and that over the past weeks there have been reports of theft and burglary, especially at Asankrangwa of which some of the suspects are currently being investigated while others are standing trial at the law court.

However, he maintained that the security agencies are doing everything they can to ensure that everybody goes about their duties peacefully and called for the support and cooperation of the traditional authorities, members of the assembly and the general public to volunteer information on people of suspicious characters to the security forces.
