W/R commends Zoomlion

Residents of the Western Region, in particular those in the four coastal districts of the region have showered praises on the management and staff of the Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL), a waste management expert for its efforts to rid the communities especially the district capitals of filth.

They also commended Zoomlion which is arguably the biggest and the best waste management company in the country for introducing Zoil, a subsidiary of the company which seeks to clean the beaches of refuse and plant coconut alongside the beaches to prevent sea erosion.

According to the residents, Zoomlion has been able to clear the markets centers of garbage without was a bane on the Assemblies and the market women.

They have been able to deposit the water passages in the communities and the markets to reduce the frequent floods which occur with the slighted downpour.

“The Zoil has also been able to rid our beaches of refuse and human excretory to restore sanitary at the beaches,” they emphasized.

However, the residents called on the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAS) to allocate large areas to Zoomlion to operate since they have the capacity to improve the sanitation situation in the communities and called on the members of the public to compliment the efforts of Zoomlion by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse and throwing garbage into drains, especially when it rains which in effect will cause flood and illness.

The residents gave the remarks in an interview with the paper in some municipal and district assemblies in the region.

It was on the beautification of Ghana agenda and aims at sampling opinions from members of the communities about the sanitation situation and how it can be improved in the communities.

Madam Rita Bonsu, a hair care specialist who spoke to the paper applauded the workers of Zoomlion for their commitment considering the meager salaries they take amid inadequate logistics at their disposal.

She therefore prevailed upon the management of the company to provide more logistics, improve human capacity and liaise with the city authorities for more areas to be given them.

Activities of Zoomlion in the region include desilting of drainage bins, scrubbing the market places, sweeping the streets and mosquito control program.

Others are door-to-door waste collection, clearing the beaches and planting of coconut trees alongside the beaches, communal waste collection, management of sanitation guards and final disposal site management.

When contacted, Mr. Geshon Sogbey, Western Regional Supervisor of Zoomlion, attributed the success to hard work, intensive supervision and taking feedbacks from the public.

He affirmed the commitment of his outfit to continue to focus on initiatives to improve the sanitation situation in the region and prevent diseases and disaster and argued, “total management of all final disposal sites in the region will have a great impact on operations of the company”.

However, he was quick to add that delays in removal of waste containers by sister companies remains a bane to his outfit in that Zoomlion takes charge of sweeping in the entire communities especially the market places and that when the containers are not removed regularly, the people throw rubbish on the ground indiscriminately.

Mr. Sogbey therefore appealed to the Assemblies to expedite actions on the rezoning system and consider punitive measures offenders of its bye-laws on sanitation.
