Some staff of the Ecobrigade Afforestation Project

The Zoil Eco Brigade Project which was launched last year to pursue an aggressive coastal aforestation project is progressing.

The workers are planting more coconuts along the beaches of the Western Region. Coconut tress has been planted in all the districts along the beaches where the Eco brigade project is taking place.

These include the Shama, Ahanta West, Ellembelle, Jomoro and Nzema East Districts.

So far about 2, 300 coconut trees has been planted to replace some coconut trees planted earlier but were lost due to the Cape St. Paul’s Wilt disease.

The Manager for Zoil Services Limited, Mr. Samuel Opoku Manu in an interview said the maintenance of the coconut trees is key to the coastal environment.

The coconuts according to him will also provide a source of livelihood for the coastal dwellers. He said though the Eco brigade workers have been trained in the planting and maintenance of the coconut trees, the trees need to be tended by all and sundry to ensure that the desired results are achieved.

The Eco Brigade project aims at planting thousands of coconut trees in beaches throughout the country hoping to achieve a target of one million trees in the near future.
