Joy FM launches reading clinics

Radio for Discerning listeners JOY 99.7fm over the weekend launched a reading clinic to offer more children across the country an opportunity to benefit from its READ 100 project.

The READ 100 project was launched early this year to encourage children across the country to read.

Since February the station has hosted scores of children from all over the country to participate in its on-air reading competition.

The station has also rewarded over 12 winning children with fantastic prizes for emerging winners in each month’s reading competition.

The project has enjoyed extensive acclaim among listeners and educationists and is being likened to Oprah Winfrey’s reading activities which massively kicked up reading habits of Americans between 2000 and 2004.

In response to calls on the station to extend the benefits of the project to more children, the station this week launched a monthly reading clinic to complement the activities of its on air reading club.

Super Morning Show anchor Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah explained that “Starting July, the READ 100 team would set up a reading clinic in a community each month and would help children in that community to improve on their reading skills.

We plan to do this by reading with and to them with the support of some national icons and volunteers.”

“The clinics should help the children with pronunciations, understanding of some difficult words and discussions and comprehension of the reading material.”

The project is also soon to sign on children in schools across the country who are clamoring to be part of it.

Parents who want to register their children to participate in the monthly reading clinic in Accra have been asked to call the front desk of Joy FM on 030-7011999 or e-mail their ward’s details to READ100@myjoyonline.com.

The project currently enjoys sponsorship from Zain Telecom, Cal Bank, Safina Mineral Water, Cowbell and the Ghana Book Publishers Association.
