Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN), Ghana’s leading telecommunication company, last Monday launched its nationwide registration of sim cards in Accra.
According to Mrs Mawuena Trebarh, the Corporate Service Executive of MTN, the sim card registration and sensitization is aimed at creating awareness for the general public, especially subscribers of MTN.

She disclosed that the exercise is also in conformity to the directive by the National Communication Authority (NCA) that from the beginning of July 2010 mobile phone companies should commence the registration of their customers, adding that… “The registration will cover both existing and new subscribers of MTN”.
“MTN will use the nationwide registration and sensitization programme to educate Ghanaians about the benefits of subscriber registration”, she explained.
Mrs Trebarh emphasized that MTN has over the years demonstrated its commitment to partnering government and the regulatory agencies in ensuring that it plays its role as an industry leader in the development of the country.
For his part, the Sales and Distribution Executive, Ebenezer Asante, reiterated that the exercise is in accordance with the NCA order to all telecommunication networks to register their subscribers before the end of June 2011.
“The National Communication Authority issued a directive to all Telecommunications operators in Ghana to register all existing subscribers by June 11, 2011. All operators are to register new subscribers on their network from July 1, 2010,” he stressed.
He revealed that MTN is currently the leading telephone company in Ghana with over eight million subscribers, and assured customers of the network’s commitment to ensure the safety and security of subscriber information as it has always done with other information.
“MTN will continue to ensure the safety and security of subscriber information as it has always done with other information”, he assured.
Touching on the process of the registration, Mr Asante said the various processes a customer is required to go through will not exceed five minutes.
He listed five processes including a customer walking into a registration office with a valid ID, passport, or driver’s licenses.
Furthermore, he indicated that customers who have already registered for the mobile money are not required to take part in the ongoing exercise.
He said customers should have their sim cards registered at high traffic location nationwide, dealer branches, connect stores and other authorized areas.
