NGO builds learning centre in Cape Coast

An international non-governmental organisation (NGO), To be Worldwide Ghana, has constructed a library and an Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre in Cape Coast to boost education.

The NGO, which is based in Holland, has already established a similar project in Takoradi and hopes to do same in Kumasi and all regional capitals throughout the country.

At a programme chaired by the Chief of Abura, Nana Kwadwo Addai, to inaugurate the community library and ICT complex centre in Cape Coast over the weekend, the founder of the NGO, Madam Nellie Kirschner-Timmee, revealed that it has always been the organisation’s desire to contribute to education in Cape Coast due to the significant role the area plays in the country’s education.

According to her, To be Worldwide aims to inculcate reading habit as well as acquaint school children in the country with ICT knowledge hence the establishment of the project.

She therefore appealed to teachers and students to utilise the centre to help the NGO achieve its aim.

The Country Director of the NGO, Mrs Georgina Timmee Williams, disclosed that the GH¢170,000 project took a little over a year to complete.

She commended the Proprietress of Montessori School in Cape Coast, Mrs Diana Kumi-Bruce, and her husband for releasing part of their school land to them for free for the establishment of the learning centre.

Mrs Williams also commended the Assemblyman for Pedu, Mr Mustapha Ahmed, for assisting them with the documentation for the project and also assisting them to connect the ICT centre to electricity.

She advised parents to allow their wards to come to the centre to improve on their academic performance.

The former head master of St Augustine’s College, Mr Gyasi Appiah, who is also a lecturer at the Latin Department of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) bemoaned the way school children waste time at funerals and other entertainment programmes instead of studying.

He advised parents to supervise their children to use their time judiciously.

Mr Appiah who was the guest speaker also entreated teachers to take advantage of the centre to improve their reading habits so as to enhance their standard.

For her part, the proprietress of Montessori School, Mrs Kumi Bruce, advised students to patronise the place especially during weekends and vacations.

Mrs Kumi-Bruce acknowledged To be Worldwide Ghana for agreeing to set up the project on her land and appealed to all stakeholders and people in the community to maintain the project to benefit more generations.
