Golden Sky Academy… Knowledge is Power

Education is the key to development of every nation. This statement lies in the fact that through education a country is able to develop her human resource base which speeds up the pace of its development.

To some people, it is the responsibility of government to provide quality education. But, providing quality education cannot alone be left on the shoulders of the government of the day.

This is where private individuals’ participation in the provision of qualitative education cannot be glossed over. One of such private schools that is helping to shape the future of Ghanaian children is Golden Sky Academy. Golden Sky is located at Amasaman in Accra.

It was established on 5th September, 2006 with the only facilities being nursery, KG 1&2 and a total school population of 17 children, 9 of them girls and 8 boys with 4 teachers.

In an interview with School Profile Today, the owners of the school, Mrs Mercy Kumi and Mr Abdul Aziz, a USA based business man, disclosed that when they first came to Amasaman they realised parents in the area did not know the importance of formal education.

“Therefore children in the area were mostly found roaming on the streets of Amasaman,” noted Mrs Kumi.

Moved by this situation, Mrs Kumi told School Profile Today she together with her husband pooled resources together to establish a private school with the aim of reducing illiteracy rate in the area.

“Besides that, personally I have love for children and as I am talking to you now I have six children who live with me in my residence, though, the boarding facility has not been completed,” Mrs Kumi revealed.

Mrs Kumi continued that it was easy setting up the school as his husband had to travel to the USA to look for money for their project.

She said she and one Mr Atsitsugbe in the company of Doris Mantey sometimes had to walk from house-to-house to convince parents to bring their wards to their school.

She continued that since the parents were not ready to educate their children they were equally not ready to invest any money either. So “we took it to upon ourselves to lecture them on the importance of education before they pay something far below the expected fees.”

Currently, the school has a population of about 184 students, 20 teachers who are always ready to give a helping hand to students. Moreover, the school has facilities such as a computer lab, a bus and a canteen where both students and pupils go to have their lunch.

School Profile Today also learnt that teachers in the school are well trained and disciplined.

Touching on some policies of the school, Mrs Kumi indicated that one factor that has seen her school standing tall is that she has employed trained teachers who give off their best. She also said she always encourages her students to speak good English all the time.

She took the opportunity to pay tribute and congratulated her late father C. K. Kumi, Nana Okyere Mantey, MD of Mak-Mans Fabrics Enterprise, Madam Doris Mantey, Mr Oko Mensah and those who – in diverse ways – have contributed to the development of Golden Sky Academy.
