Susec Model Junior High School was over the weekend crowned winners of the second edition of the Project Citizen Competition, which was held in Sunyani for JHS schools in the Brong Ahafo region.
The victory means that Susec Model JHS would represent the region at the national competition expected to be held in Accra later this year.
Susec Model delivered a lecture on child abuse and gave a vivid account of its impacts on the African continent, particularly countries in the West Africa to win the ultimate prize.
The other competing schools spoke on various topics affecting women and children in the country, especially in the Sunyani municipality.
In all, seven schools including, Ridge Experimental ‘A’, Abesim Presbyterian JHS, Nyamaa JHS, St Mary’s JHS and High Street ‘A’ and ‘B’ JHS took part in the competition which eventual saw Susec Model JHS running away with the honours.
Speaking in an interview with Today, Mr Stephen Obuor, Co-ordinator of Project Citizen at Susec Model JHS, disclosed that the secret of his school’s success was due to hard work and determination.
“We were third at the maiden edition of the competition, which was held last year and because of this, we knew what the judges were expecting from the participating schools; we chose to speak on ‘Child Abuse.’
We also visited DOVVSU in Sunyani here to arm ourselves with some statistics on the topic. And also gathered some vital information from the newspapers including, your paper Today, where we had information on 251 trafficked children who had been rescued by an NGO at Kete-Krachi in the Volta Region. It all helped us in our preparation towards the competition,” he disclosed.
Earlier, Notre Dame Girls Senior High School was crowned winners of the SHS category of the competition and, would also be representing the region.
Sunyani Senior High School (Susec), Sacred Heart Senior High School and Nsuatre took the first, second and third positions respectively.
Twene Amanfo SHS, Sunyani, Seventh Day Adventist SHS, Sunyani and Chiraa SHS all participated in the SHS competition.
The program was organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Civitas Ghana in collaboration with the Centre for Civic Education, USA, with sponsorship from Cowbell.
