According to him, the distance learning education programme would play an effective tool in tackling challenges inherent in the teaching profession.

The program, he further noted, makes practically possible the training of teachers for effective service delivery and provide essential students support.

He mentioned that one of the most important benefits of the program was its flexibility, as students can approach their course work when it suits their schedule.

According to Professor Asabere-Ameyaw, the absence of immediate peer group to share learning experience, learning in isolation, difficulty in finding library facilities and the problem of performing social roles and ones’ role as a teacher in addition to studies are problems inherently associated with the program.

Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw was speaking at the matriculation ceremony of 618 students of the university, who have applied to undertake courses leading to the award of a Diploma in Basic Education.

The university, which now boasts of a total distant student population of 17,001, has trained 7,978 professional teachers by distance.

Out of 2,254 applications received for Diploma in Basic Education program for this year, 1,601applicants have been offered admission.

Thirteen study centers in various locations of the school where students will meet tutors monthly have been established with well-equipped teaching facilities; also tutors have been equipped with the necessary pedagogical skills to assist them with their learning difficulties.

The vice-chancellor advised the students to study diligently to complete the program successfully and on schedule to justify the time and money invested.

“Your continued stay on the program should be a motivating factor to other teachers who are yet to decide to be on the program,” he added.

He implored them to note carefully that the goal of the distance education program of the university is not to assist them acquire certificates for enhanced salaries but change their total outlook, commitment to duty and above all attitude to life.
