Leonardo Junior School Complex: “Self Discovery is God’s Discovery”

One educational set-up that has gained a lot of prominence in Tema is Leonardo Junior School Complex. It was the first Day Care center established in Tema Manhean in the year 1976, and was founded by five indigenes of Tema with the aim of improving the standard of education of the people in the area.

The school later grew into a primary school at the backyard of Mr. Leonard Adjetey, one of the founding members of the school. Then in 1993, it was moved to its present location. From this time onwards it started full basic school with computer training.

After 16 years of existence as a Junior High School, that is, from the year 1993 to 2009, Leonardo Junior School Complex can boast of many academic laurels. Just this year the school was rated 32nd amongst the 240 schools within the Tema, Adenta – Madina circuit by the Ghana Education Service.

Leonardo Junior School Complex is a grade ‘A’ school and one of the best schools in Tema. In the year 2000 final year pupils of school registered and sat for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E) for the first time. Fourteen (14) pupils wrote the B.E.C.E and impressively all of them excelled with distinctions.

Up till now, pupils from the school keep excelling in the B.E.C.E year after year without much difficulty, with 85% making distinction grades.

Pupils from the Leonardo Junior School Complex have the opportunity to continue their secondary school programmes at Tema Secondary School, Chemu Senior High, Accra Academy, Presec Legon, Achimota, Pope John’s, Adisadel College, Mfantsiman Senior High, Mfantsipim Senior High, Mawuli Senior High and other Grade ‘A’ Senior High Schools countrywide.

Although Leonardo Junior School Complex started with 14 pupils, it currently has over 300 pupils with 24 teaching staff and7 non-teaching staff who are committed and dedicated to their call of duty.

The institution has improved over the years and can presently boast of a Crèche and Early Childhood Development, Primary School, Junior High School.

The school also has facilities which include Science Laboratory, Computer Laboratory, Library, Creative Arts Studio, School Bus and Boarding Hostel Facility.

The institution offers training in computer science, technical skills workshop, music teaching, sports training and cadet training

The only challenge Leonardo Junior School Complex face is the location. Though it is one of the private Grade ‘A’ schools, yet it is the only school which charges relatively low fees. The reason is because Tema Manhean is a fishing community, and most parents are unable to pay and enroll their wards in the school.

Since the school started the basic level, founding members of the school have been donating both in cash and in kind to keep the school running.
