Some women groups in the Ashanti Region have been educated on the nutritious value of chicken from America.
The groups, mainly made up of women’s fellowships from some churches in the region were taught how to preserve and cook chicken from United States of America (USA).
The event which was an initiative of the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council (USAPIC), a Non- Governmental Organization sought to increase awareness on poultry products from the United States of America, increase its consumption, create awareness that US poultry is safe for human consumption and also educate them on safe cooking methods.
Dubbed “USA Poultry, Safe to Eat,” the four month educational and awareness creation campaign was climaxed with a cooking competition among the 10 groups which included the Women’s fellowships from Tanoso Methodist church, Apostles Continuation Church and the Church of Pentecost all in Kumasi.
A client service Executive of Export Ghana Limited, the organizers of the educational program, Agnes Adonoo, assured the women of the safety of frozen chicken saying chicken from American could be frozen for a whole year before getting spoilt. She noted that freezing poultry products even for a long time does not destroy the nutrients that exist in it.
She explained that the competition was aimed at assessing the level of understanding of the women during the education. “We want to know whether you really understood everything we taught you during our various meetings”, she said.
Ms Adonoo later told TODAY in an interview that the drive was to increase awareness and consumption of the USA poultry products thereby increasing the profits of their clients since they are in business.
“This educational program does not mean the consumption level of American chicken has decreased but you know our clients are in business and they need to increase their profits, so we need to increase the awareness”. Ms Adonoo explained.
Each group received a certificate of participation and commendation after the competition while the Caravan of Prayer Outreach Ministry received a table top fridge for emerging first. The Braimah Ladies and Presby Women’s Fellowship also received a microwave oven and a food processor for placing second and third respectively.
