Emeka Chukwudi wins Y FM/Stone Pool Tournament

Emeka Chukwudi, a Nigerian, has won the maiden edition of the Y FM Stone Pool Tournament after competing in a keenly contested pool tournament over the weekend at the Jokers Night Club in South Labadi.

For his prize, he took home a pool table and a 42-inch plasma flat screen television. He also gets to enjoy a whole weekend stay at the Hilltop Hotel in Accra and free tickets provided by Silverbird Cinemas which entitles him to watch free movies at Silverbird cinemas for a month.

First runner-up, Rufus Earley, went home with a laptop while Jamel Crawford, second runner-up, taking away a Home Theatre system.

All the other finalists were also given mobile phones, T-shirts and Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) products.

The tournament successfully reached its finals with eight (8) interesting and skillful finalists who competed for the grand prize.

The qualifying games had been played in Tema and Accra in some very popular night clubs including Neighbourhood Pub, Vanity Night Club, Jokers Nightclub, Blaze Lounge, Pool Bar and 8-Ball Pub in Tema.

The event drew crowds and spectators, some of who took the opportunity to appreciate this exciting and entertaining game.

Interest in the game kept growing stronger with every passing day because of the breath-taking and lip smacking prizes won by the winners and the finalists.

Major sponsors of the tournament were Stone Strong Lager Beer, a product of ABL, and PZ Electricals who kindly donated a range of their Haier Thermocool products as prizes for the winners. These products included a 42-inch Plasma screen, a Home Theatre system, a laptop and mobile phones. Other sponsors were Silverbird Cinemas, MKOGH Clothing, Imprint and the participating night clubs.

“I never knew pool was so interesting. I‘m amazed at the skill and intellect required to play this game. I used to think it was one of those meaningless games played by lazy people. I have started learning the game and I wish to participate in the next competition” says Maurice Baidoo, a new fan of the game.

International Hiplife artiste, Tic Tac, thrilled fans to many of his hiplife songs during the launch of the tournament. The finals which was held at the Jokers Night Club on Saturday, August 22 2009, attracted music icons such as Wanlov Da Kubolor, Ayigbe Edem, 4X4, Kwaku T and Tregmatic, Guru, Pope Skinny and Macho Rapper. These artistes indeed treated the audiences to a blast of music in the pub.

Not only were there prizes for participants and winners, fans were also catered for in this maiden tournament. They had the opportunity of taking home prizes as well as catching some real fun with products from Stone Strong Lager. Some fans also won prizes including mobile phones which were provided by Y FM Drive Time programme, Dryve of Your Lyfe, with Nana Kwame.

“This is a win-win affair. Winners and all finalists took away mouth-watering prizes just for participating. All they needed to do was to justify which of the prizes they were given. Thankfully, this is a game enjoyed in an atmosphere of great camaraderie, fun and cheer. The best of the best was difficult but safely decided after the final games at Jokers Night Club” says, Mr. George Laing, General Manager of Y FM.

Laing continues “We are happy about the patronage of the maiden edition of the tournament. The interest it has generated leaves us with more determination and hope that this is a project that has come to stay. We hope to make it bigger and better in the coming editions”.

The objective of this tournament is in line with Y FM’s desire and commitment to encourage sports among the youth. Sports, undoubtedly is a number one unifier in the world, and pool certainly plays a major role as an interesting sporting activity. Y FM therefore wants to take the game to a higher level by mobilizing all interested stakeholders to develop the game as a force to reckon with in Ghana’s sports and entertainment calendar.

Y FM 107.7 is the only youth-dedicated channel in Accra, and barely after a year’s operation has come to change radio listening habits among the youth in Accra and its environs.

Today, many young people have made radio a part of their daily lives because of the interesting programming carefully designed for and targeted exclusively at them. Y FM – Radio for the young and the young at heart - is proud to be associated with this initiative as it complements the station’s commitment to encourage and help young people have fun and lead meaningful lives. Thus through quality entertainment, young people would also develop talents and skills while also generating some wealth for themselves.
