The youth must be agents of change

THE future of Ghana’s development would depend largely on a youth who are robust and willing to support the country’s development efforts. They must bear in mind that they have a shared responsibility in ensuring that Ghana becomes a better place not only for us but future and yet unborn generations.

THEREFORE, it is imperative that our young men and women learn to acknowledge and appreciate the fact that they are essential stakeholders in Ghana’s socio-economic development. However, most of them have not been seen as proactive.

IT is unfortunate how our youth have allowed themselves as tools for perpetuating violence and causing mayhem in society. At the recent bye-elections organized in Akwatia in the Eastern Region, there were reports of violent clashes between NDC and NPP youths, which even led to many hospitalized.

THIS trend has created a negative impression on the minds of many Ghanaians that our youth are more interested in violence and chaos activities. This negative image about the youth in Ghana does not augur well and must therefore be looked at seriously.

WHAT we at TODAY do not understand is why the youth are always seen in the forefront of violent activities. It is high that they are told that they have a lot of untapped potential in them which when utilized well will contribute immensely to the development of our economy.

IT is against this background that the paper agrees wholeheartedly with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Mrs Christiana Kobina, who during the recent celebration of the International Youth Day in the Western Region urged the youth to see themselves as agents of change.

On our part, we would advise them to direct their energies into productive ventures, since it is only in such ways they can improve their standard of living. In fact, the situation where many of them prefer to remain unemployed when they could be actively involved in agricultural activities is not the best. It is their idleness that allows them to be employed by political parties to engage in violence.

AS we add our voice on the need for the youth to engage in development activities, we would also urge the ruling NDC government to provide adequate jobs for our growing youth. The government must know that this is a responsibility that it cannot relegate to the background.
